On October 20, 2016 Sen. Heitkamp called on Postmaster General Megan Brennan to protect the mail service in Amidon and Halliday, North Dakota.

The Halliday facility is being closed due to unsafe conditions found in the post office.  Sen. Heitkamp is asking the US Postal Service to take two steps.  First she asks that they “clearly communicate a schedule for dealing with and ultimately fixing the unsafe conditions at the post office.”  She defines the ultimate goal as restoring the post office to full operation.  Second she asks that the USPS “Implement and clearly communicate the interim plan while the post office is closed to ensure customers know how they can access mail services”.

The Amidon facility is closing due to lease expiration.  Sen. Heitkamp has asked the USPS to extend the comment period for the community, and to make sure the Amidon community knows of the extension.  Additionally, she asked the Postal Service to “develop a comprehensive plan for customers in the Amidon community that will show them how their mail needs will be met.”

Sen. Heitkamp is a strong advocate of improving service by the USPS.  Her “Fix My Mail” initiative has brought in hundreds of personal stories from North Dakotans on the challenges they have faced with declines in mail service standards.   Those stories were sent to the US Postal Service so they could determine what action needed to take to restore adequate service.

In April 2016 Postmaster General Brennan visited North Dakota to hear directly from the community on the impact of declines in service standards.
