Today, April 6, 2022, the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 was signed into law.
This legislation will eliminate the previously required prefunding of health and retirement benefits which had kept the Postal Service financially strapped for 15 years. Additionally, six day mail delivery is guaranteed, the Postal Service website will include a public dashboard where customers can see how their mail delivery is going, and the USPS is now able to partner with other government entities to offer non-postal services in retail facilities.
Prior to the signing, President Biden acknowledged lawmakers in attendance who were instrumental in getting this legislation passed. In particular Senator Carper of Delaware, who has been an advocate of postal reform legislation for many years, was singled out for his extensive efforts. President Biden stated that the postal service was created to connect the colonies and build one nation. He praised the Postal Service as being fundamental to the economy. President Biden then promised to focus on securing green vehicles for the USPS in the future.
AUSPL has been working toward postal reform legislation for many years. Led by former AUSPL President, Morgan Wolaver, AUSPL staff and members have worked to educate legislators about the network of leased postal facilities, the need to repeal the prefunding mandate, and the importance of getting the USPS on a strong financial footing. Thank you and congratulations to all who have been involved.
