In her quarterly video address to USPS employees, Postmaster General Megan Brennan discussed the financial outlook of the USPS, the help the USPS needs from Congress, and what the Postal Service is doing to retain business and expand their customer base.
PMG Brennan named three core areas needed to restore financial stability to the USPS:
- Finding more ways to increase revenue and efficiency within the USPS business model
- Increased pricing flexibility from the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC)
- Legislation to increase revenue and relieve mandated expenses that the USPS cannot afford.
Brennan also praised the USPS Fairness Act, H.R. 2382, which recently passed in the House of Representatives, saying its effect would be positive for the Postal Service. The Senate’s sister bill, S. 2965, is currently awaiting action in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee which is Chaired by Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. PMG Brennan cautioned that passage of these bills, which would rid the USPS of its retirement prefunding requirement would be a first step, and that additional legislation is needed to help the USPS.
Ms. Brennan said that service is the key to increasing package business in the face of increased competition from private carriers. USPS Management is working to position the USPS as a partner to commercial business.
PMG Brennan restated that the problems of the US Postal Service are serious but solvable.
