Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Brenda Lawrence (D-MI) have submitted their names to the White House as candidates for upcoming spots on the USPS Board of Governors.
The terms of two of the current USPS Governors are set to expire on December 8, 2022. Both have the option for a one year renewal, or President Biden could chose to re-nominate them for seven year terms. Or, Biden could chose to nominate new Governors.
Maloney is the current Chair of the House Oversight Committee. From this position she was able to oversee passage of a major postal reform bill. Additionally, Maloney has worked for the purchase of electronic vehicles for the USPS fleet. As a Representative, Maloney has long enjoyed the support of postal employees.
Lawrence has a 30 year career history with the USPS and brings extensive knowledge of USPS operations. Lawrence supported Maloney’s postal reform legislation, despite reservations about the bill allowing the USPS to change delivery standards.
Board of Governor members are nominated by a sitting President and approved by members of the Senate. There are 11 members, including the Postmaster General and Deputy Postmaster General. Federal statute requires that no more than 5 members be from the same one of the major political parties.
