The USPS has awarded the contract to build its Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) to Oshkosh Defense.
Oshkosh Defense, will build between 50,000 and 165,000 NGDVs over the next 10 years.
2023 is the year the new vehicles will begin service. NGDVs will be both electric and gasoline powered. Additionally, looking toward the future and more of the fleet being electric, the gasoline powered models will have the ability to easily transition to electric power. The current plan is that about 10% of the new NGDVs will have electric power.
Advanced comfort and safety features, as well as increased cargo capacity are critical elements of the new design. The Postal Service says air-conditioning, better ergonomic design, 360 degree cameras, and automatic braking are included in the new design.
