A letter urging the Senate to provide aid for the US Postal Service in the next COVID relief package, known as the HEROES Act, was sent to Senate leadership on June 10, 2020 by Democrat Representative Mike Levin (CA-49) and Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1).
The letter states the first COVID relief package, the CARES Act, “did not adequately address the financial hardship this crisis [the pandemic] has caused for the United States Postal Service (USPS).” Senators are encouraged to “provide $25 billion in emergency grants to the USPS to offset COVID-19 revenue losses …”
The letter, which is signed by an additional 132 Republican and Democrat House members goes on to say that support for the USPS is bi-partisan and that the USPS represents what is best about America.
In the current COVID-19 relief package before Congress, the HEROES Act, the House approved aid for the USPS. That bill, which includes relief for families as well as businesses, is now being heard in the Senate, where there is resistance to the built-in $3 trillion price tag.
