Have You Noticed an Additional Flag at the Post Office?
Changes to the United States Code require the U.S. Postal Service to fly the POW/MIA (Prisoner of War/Missing in Action) flag at post offices every day that the United States flag is flown. Prior to changes made in November of 2019, the US Postal Service was required to fly the POW/MIA flag on selected holidays including the Fourth of July and Veterans Day.
The statute says “The National League of Families POW/MIA flag is designated as the symbol of our Nation’s concern and commitment to resolving as fully as possible the fates of Americans still prisoner, missing, and unaccounted for in Southeast Asia, thus ending the uncertainty for their families and the Nation.” The National League of Families was incorporated in 1970 with the mission of obtaining the release of all prisoners and the fullest possible accounting for the missing and repatriation of all recoverable remains of those who died serving our nation during the Vietnam War.
