Amazon looks into last mile delivery for its packages. An article in The Verge* states that Amazon would use shipping hubs in a wagon wheel, or hub-and-spoke concept for support of smaller shipping facilities in America’s rural areas.
Further evidence of this goal is found in a September 2020 employment ad for a DSP Pricing Lead in Nashville, TN, which states: “The goal of Amazon Logistics is to build a world class last mile delivery operation.” Last mile delivery refers to delivery to rural communities. Currently commercial carriers have found last mile delivery to be unprofitable, and have partnered with the USPS for this service. In 2019 alone the USPS delivered approximately 1.54 billion packages for Amazon, – 30% of Amazon’s total package volume.
