Amazon announced today that Prime members in Philadelphia, Phoenix, Orlando and Dallas can have delivery in just a few hours after ordering, at no charge for orders over $35.
Amazon’s newest weapon in the same-day delivery battle is new, “first of a kind buildings” that serve as mini-fulfillment centers, according to today’s press release. These facilities are 100,000 sq. ft. or about one-tenth the size of the large Amazon warehouses. One of the advantages Walmart has held over Amazon in the same-day delivery category, is that 90% of the population lives within 10 miles of a Walmart store. Amazon has far fewer warehouse locations. The mini-fulfillment centers will decrease the time required to make deliveries.
In addition to making same-day delivery more convenient for customers in certain cities, these customers can now place their orders for delivery throughout the day. Other same-day delivery programs require requests to be made fairly early in the morning for same-day delivery.
