On February 25, 2016 the US Postal Service filed notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) of intent to rollback Market Dominant prices. The new rates are expected to go into effect on April 10, 2016.

The rate reduction is due to the expiration of the Exigent Surcharge initiated in January 2014. First class letter rates will return to $.47 from $.49.  Extra ounces for 1st class mail will drop from $.22 to $.21.

The last time the US Postal Service decreased rates was in 1919. Following the end of World War I, rates that had increased from $.02 to $.03 during the war went back to $.02.
