On January 22, the US Postal Service unveiled new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations that will be used at the South Atlanta Sorting and Delivery Center (S&DC). Other charging stations will be added across the country at other distribution centers.
Also introduced were the new electric Ford commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) vehicles that the USPS will be using. The USPS plans to purchase 9,250 of these Ford vehicles as part of its fleet of 21,000 COTS electric vehicles. These will be alongside the planned 45,000 Next Generation Vehicles the USPS will use to replace old vehicles.
The new COTS vehicles have three times the capacity of the Gruman LLV’s that are currently being replaced. The increased capacity will contribute to delivery efficiency.
The Postal Service’s progress towards having the largest electric vehicle fleet in the country is part of its 10-year Delivering For America plan. Funding for the electric vehicles and related infrastructure was created in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 which provided $3 billion to electrify the postal service’s fleet.
AUSPL has been told that for the foreseeable future, these electric vehicles and charging stations will be put into use at USPS owned facilities.
