Postmaster General Louis DeJoy spoke to attendees at the 2023 National Postal Forum and AUSPL President Keith LaShier was in attendance.
DeJoy discussed the progress the USPS has made in the last two years . He compared the current situation to the terrible financial condition of the USPS when he became PMG. In discussing those seriously bad years he made the following comments:
“We survived by not paying into our employee retirement plans. We survived by deferring investment and maintenance of our infrastructure. We survived by allowing unwelcoming and non-productive work environments for all our employees. And we survived by not properly investing in our business model to address rapidly developing market changes.”
DeJoy said that the management team is working toward improving operational precision, reducing cost of performance, improving service reliability, growing the business, and creating exciting long term career paths for employees.
Additionally, DeJoy described the redesign of the mail processing network and the operating practices deployed to use it as “The biggest initiative” being undertaken. DeJoy said that the new Sorting and Distribution Centers (S&DCs) will have more space, better parking lots, as well as substantially improved electricity and other infrastructure. These facilities will be larger and more centrally located. He stressed the importance of these facilities to commercial customers because the single point of distribution will allow mail to reach many more homes and businesses more quickly.
DeJoy has stated in the past, and again at the National Postal Forum that the retail functions of facilities losing delivery routes will not be affected.
