The USPS is pilot testing new small package sorting equipment as part of an effort to grow its package delivery service. Earlier this year, USPS installed the Small Parcel Sorting System (SPSS) machines in select facilities in Florida, Arizona, California, Texas and New York.
The machines have been hugely productive. The SPSS machines can sort more than 6,000 small packages per hour. This is 1,000 more parcels than expected. The most successful site is at Royal Palm P&DC in Opa-Locka, Florida. As a result of the outstanding performance at this location, the USPS will install the new equipment at 26 sites country wide, using the Royal Palm P&DC accomplishments as a model to measure performance nationwide.
